Over the years, Slowpitch softball has really grown and developed from a recreational beer or church league, to a highly competitive sport. As the sport has developed, so have the equipment, regulations and leagues. There are four major associations for Slowpitch: ASA, USSSA, NSA and SSUSA. With these associations come different regulations on bats and softballs. Because of this, it is important to pay attention to the certification stamps on the softballs that you purchase, as well as the C.O.R. and compression (COR/compression) of the balls. The COR/compression will determine how hard the core of the ball is and how many pounds of pressure it can take on impact – essentially, it will determine if the ball is “bouncy” and “squishy” or hard and solid. The type of league you play in: women’s, men’s or coed, will determine the size of ball you need. Men’s will use a standard 12” slowpitch ball, women’s an 11” slowpitch ball and coed will, usually, go back-and-forth between 12” for when a guy is up and 11” for when a girl is at the plate.
